Metalworkers specializing in construction technology manufacture and install roofing, façade elements, gates, window frames or protective grilles made of steel or other metals. They often produce individual pieces to customer specifications. They follow technical drawings when working and processing light metals or steel by hand or by machine. They process metal plates, tubes or profiles, cut them to size and shape them. They then weld, rivet or screw the individual components together. They also service and maintain their products.
Tasks and activities:
- Manufacturing and pre-assembling components
- Drilling holes and welding joints
- Operating and setting up conventional or numerically controlled processing machines (e.g. bending and forming machines)
- Pre-assemble prefabricated components into assemblies by welding, screwing or riveting
- remove rust from components, clean weld seams, carry out corrosion protection and other surface treatment processes if necessary
- assemble manufactured components, standard parts and finished components and accessories into fixed and movable metal structures (final assembly)
- check prefabricated components for dimensional accuracy
- select suitable lifting and transportation equipment, transport components
- aligning components when building metal structures, fixing them with spot welds and assembling them by welding or bolting them together
- check work carried out and perform functional tests on moving parts
- Carry out maintenance and servicing work
- repairing components and, if necessary, remanufacturing parts that have become unusable
